Beginning of the end of the beginning

Finally began the last part of Book 1 of Dicebox with this action packed page(permalink).

Forgive me father/mother/sister/brother it has been 43 weeks since my last update.

I just died a little there calculating the time lapse.

I actually drew 62 pages of comics during that time–just not Dicebox. Work for hire stuff, babies cost money and all that. But those pages don’t count, somehow. (I try not to think about how if they were all Dicebox pages I’d be done with Part 1 of Book 2. Nope, not thinking about it. Not me.)

All’s this to say it feels good to be actually doing updates on Diceboxagain. It feels right, even with all my dissatisfactions with this page* Actually, that feels right too.

Now as I’m still in a time of chaos and upheaval,** I will be alternating weeks with Patrick until “Don’t Look Back” finishes. I’m hoping my updates will become multipage affairs soon. Truth be told, I was hoping to make this update 4 pages in length as this is a slow passage even for me and will be more sensible and purposeful with the next three pages. Oh well, best laid plans and all that.

To sum up: I MISSED TORMENTING MY LADIES. Glad to be back to it. I feel like a whole person again.

*If you subscribe to the RSS feed, it’ll update after I correct one faux pas when I get off work)

**Not just the Kid, but some home repair that has currently left an office nomad. I can make art just about anywhere, but my work flow gets seriously disrupted which makes me less efficient.

punk out

I’m actually talking about me and my lack of posts for, um…

…a month and a half.

Huh. Didn’t actually realize it had been that long.

I should have at least made note of new Dicebox Aside pages by Patrick Farley. Well, if you depend on this journal for update notices, you now have 5 pages of “Don’t Look Back” to enjoy, starting right here.

And as for my starting up Dicebox proper again on March 4th… yeah, that didn’t happen. Combination of workload and lingering carpal tunnel complications among other things. Though I will resume doing Dicebox beginning in April. Dammit.

Rocking it

Rockin' it

Across town from me, at this moment, my daughter is wearing this very ensemble. That thought pleases me. (Note the stylish R. Stevens original onesie she’s sporting.)

Who else has been rocking it is Patrick Farley in his Dicebox saga “Don’t Look Back.” I realize that I’ve neglected mentioning it here for the past couple of weeks. If you depend on this journal for update notices, you’ll wanna go back to page 27 for the last three pages.

But back to talking about my daughter. Taran is 13 weeks old as of today and is indeed rocking my world. And shaking it, rearranging it, spitting up on it…

I never really sought to be a mother but I have to say it’s actually kinda awesome. There’s nothing like watching the person she is and is becoming emerge each day. This past Sunday, she invented her first game.

Here’s how it goes: while I hold her against my shoulder, she looks at and engages the person sitting next to us. Then she squeals in delight and hides her face against my neck. Then turns back to the the person and begins again. She did this most recently with Bill; both seemed to enjoy it immensely.

Of course this whole motherhood thing has been very challenging for me, especially since returning to the day job a couple weeks ago. And frustrating in regards to getting art done. However, I’m managing and have actually figured out when I’ll be resuming Dicebox: March 4th. I might be splitting updates with Patrick as he finishes his mini retro epic, but the show will (finally) go on.

All is calm, all is bright…

Well the first part isn’t so in Patrick’s latest page of “Don’t Look Back.” (permalink)

Just see what Molly has to put up with:

um, ew.

I mean, really, that line was a moldy-oldy back in Wenceslas’ time.

But in snowbound Portland, everything is indeed calm and bright. And quite pretty.

Happy holidays to all, whichever one(s) you chose to celebrate.

Licks butter off of door posts

Beiwe

I usually do some sort of drawing for the winter solstice on the solstice itself and what’s above is this year’s. This is my first piece of color in a couple of months; I literally dusted off the Cintiq to do it.

Instead of the typical Celtic/Wiccan/Robert Graves solstice theme, I thought I might see what other imagery I could play with and found this courtesy of Wikipedia:

The Saami, indigenous people of Finland, Sweden and Norway, worship Beiwe, the sun-goddess of fertility and sanity. She travels through the sky in a structure made of reindeer bones with her daughter, Beiwe-Neia, to herald back the greenery on which the reindeer feed. On the winter solstice, her worshipers sacrifice white female animals, and with the meat, thread and sticks, bed into rings with ribbons [sic]. They also cover their doorposts with butter so Beiwe can eat it and begin her journey once again.

Though I didn’t get it done for the solstice proper, I still thought it appropriate to share given the current snow bound state of Portland, Oregon. There is a truly impressive amount of snow on the ground for Portland, mostly unspoiled by plowing or shoveling. Something which I got to experience first hand during a foraging trek to the grocery store earlier today, where I happened to have bought butter among other things. Though we’ll be using it to put on pancakes, I think.
